Improving Meeting Culture
The Situation
The personnel department of a large Global FMCG company identified the opportunity to improve the productivity of meetings within the organisation. Most managers spent a large proportion of their time in meetings and it was understood that many of these were not effective. (Meeting Magic has research that shows up to 10% of meetings attended by a manager are a complete waste of time and 30% do not achieve objectives.)
The Results
Within the organisation there is now a common, globally-adopted approach to how meetings are run. People are reporting that meetings that are run by people using this approach are far more productive, get decisions made and are far less likely to run off track. There is also a Community of Practice within the organisation for people who have developed a high level of facilitation skills and who can facilitate meetings outside their department.
How We Did It
- Meeting Magic worked with the client to understand the kind of issues faced in meetings within their organisation.
- A viral-style approach was adopted whereby Meeting Magic facilitators were brought in to facilitate some key meetings, which then generated a demand for people to learn our approach to meeting facilitation.
- A 2 day training course was developed alongside some environmental changes within the organisation, to improve the way meetings are conducted. The course was aimed at Line
- Managers within the organisation and can now be delivered by internal Trainers.
- We coached and trained internal trainers to grow internal capability further.
- The training course has now been running since 2005, in Europe, The Americas and Asia Pacific.
- There is a growing population of managers that run really effective meetings and are demanding about the quality of meetings they attend. This is driving a culture of productive meetings throughout the organisation

Our next course is 26th-27th June.
